Dallimore or Triad painting - with craft paints!
As I mentioned the other day, I'm moving into experimenting with the Dallimore/Triad method. I'm starting off with the "Two Colour Method" right now, to get the hang of it. But...
Kevin uses the Foundry Paints and paint system. This is all well and good until you look at the prices and see that their "Starter Set" is 95GBP, which is alot more than my measly hobby budget allows. Not to mention that I've put some time and money into my craft paints and I have quite a few of them around. So what to do ...?
I miss the old painting/conversion resource Silicon Dragon. Remember that lovely resource? Find your paint and get the closest conversion? I would pay some bucks to bring that back. But in the meantime, I'm using the Internet's Wayback Machine to great effect to help me.
So back to my search.... I found old posts when searching TheGoogle for "Foundry Triads Craft Paints" and one of them led to a forum post which talked about a gent who had done some triad work, but those links led to a now defunct blog... which Wayback Machine had archived! Even better, the guy did not use graphics, but tables and text and RGB colors.
So... presenting these old blog entries as archived for your perusal and usage...

Many of the triads from the railfan pages didn't have corresponding matches to Foundry.
Because I'm a tinkerer - I'm looking at the triads from these old pages and the Foundry Starter system and doing a visual compare and changing some of the recommendations in the triads to match the Foundry triads.
Now, I know that I can't rely on either Foundry's graphics for colors and the RGB values from the railfan page are sometimes VERY off. This may help me to get in the right direction... and with craft paints, the most I'm out is a couple of bucks. I can always take what I have and make it work.

Note - The original triad on the website had the shade screen color looking really bright, but it is definitely dark in person! Another option (if you can find it) may be the DecoArt Americana Black Green #DA157. |

DecoArt Americana Milk Chocolate DA174 |
Delta Ceramcoat Territorial Beige 2425 |
Notes: This is a proposed triad based on what I'm seeing from the railfan page and how the Spearshaft seems to progress in color. I'll have to look at the actual colors, as I'm learning to not trust the RGB (as the railfan page warned!) I'm replacing the highlight DecoArt Americana - Terra Cotta - DA062 with the Territorial Beige, |

DecoArt Americana Moon Yellow DA007 |
Notes:This is not a Found Starter Set color triad, but for completeness to have the Primary colors. I'm on the fence about the Marigold as the shade. It's dark, but not that dark. I'll try it and see. Have I mentioned that raft paints are cheap. |
Another solution is to choose your base color, then add a drop of white for the lighter shade or a drop of black for the darker shade.
ReplyDeleteVery true. Black/white tinting can be harsh. Brown/yellow works better with some colors, like tinting red and green, in some cases.
ReplyDeleteDid not realize that. (I still use Dip, myself...) Thanks for the info!
