I made 70 people scream at GaryCon

... and I didn't have to take off any clothes to make it happen! But this did just happen this weekend at GaryCon IX and I have to share it.

It's Saturday night AD&D in a room full of tables with people playing games. There were about 10 tables in the room, so figure an average of 6 to 8 per table. It's about 10:30pm or so.

These guys have no idea what's about to happen...

My players have delved deep underground and found themselves in an underground forest of mushrooms. Big tree-like mushrooms with tendrils. Small ones. Medium ones, and all growing together very close, so that you have to push your way through in order to get from Point A to Point B.

And... as you might guess... where there are mushrooms, there are shriekers.

Hi. We're gonna shriek now...

So, I plop these two figures down in front of them and start making this weird noise to represent the shrieking - think of a lower pitched Invasion of the Body Snatchers kind of shriek.

And then... everyone else started shrieking. In the room. Every table. People turned around and faced our table and started echoing what I was doing.

It. Was. Fucking. GLORIOUS!

It lasted maybe 10 seconds, but I wish I had a video of it. The players at my table are looking around with the "what the fuck is happening and what do we do now".

It ended as abruptly as it began and I said to the players "... and THAT is what you hear." as there was laughter around the room. One of those organic moments that you find at a geek/nerd convention. If you were in that room at that time, thank you for making THE memory of my GaryCon IX 2017 weekend.

So yes, I'm THAT GOOD of a DM if I can make 70 people shriek at the same time. *smirk* *laugh*

  1. It experiences like that which drive us to play these "silly" games. I'm sure your players will be telling that story for the rest of their lives.

  3. @RipperX - new theme doesn't seem to have the +1 on it. But it's great to hear from you!

  4. Wish I had been there... Not necessarily at your table!

  5. I was one of the players in that game, and yes... it was as glorious as described.

Michael - you are an awesome DM and I really your game! Very evocative and perfectly paced. This was my first GaryCon (any con, for that matter) and it is was worth every second; I'm very grateful I was able to attend this year. Thanks for giving us that great experience!

    1. Thank you Don, you played your "DonCorleon" wonderfully and I'm very glad you had a good time. If you stop by at GenCon, or you come to next year's GaryCon, I hope I'll see you again!
